Trance pop has never sounded as heartfelt and defiant as it does on Japanese Breakfast’s sweet new single “Everybody Wants to Love You.” In just over 2 minutes, Michelle Zauner is able to stuff all the joy and excitement that comes along with newfound attraction in a refreshing, albeit brief slice of pop-perfection. Her previous, heart-wrenching single “In Heaven” contrasts remarkably when it comes to lyrics. Sonically, however, these songs continue Zauner’s attention to soaring choruses and infectious melodies. “Will you lend me your toothbrush? Will you make me breakfast in bed?” Zauner asks as warm synths swell in-and-out of as trebly guitar picks along heavenly backing vocals. “Ask me to get married, and then make me breakfast again,” she concludes, her hopeful daydreams warm her soul. Sam Cook-Parrott of Radiator Hospital lends his considerable vocal talents as he alternates singing the titular line with Zauner. Her desire for her newfound love cuts through the dreamy atmospheric fuzz. Zauner longs for the small, minute details in any loving relationship. Her heart-struck enthusiasm may just hold the key to making the big picture things a reality.
