Last month, Japanese Breakfast announced their second album, Soft Sounds From Another Planet, along with the brand new single “Machinist.” Now they’re back to fill our ears with even more excitement on the new single, “Boyish.” As soon as the tune begin to play, you’re transported to the sounds of a sorrowful track backed with soothing harmonies, booming arrangements, and synth strings that keep you hypnotized throughout the duration of the single. Once the track is over, those who were kept under Boyish's spell are left wanting more. Although it may sound like a love song, there is a deeper message that is more than just loving, and being loved.
The minute delicate, and sweet vocals utter, “I want you, and you want something more beautiful” will send yearning hearts into a frenzy of heartbreak, giving them an understanding of the feelings of the pain someone can go through. Michelle Zauner says, “The song is about jealousy and sexual incompetence. It's about feeling ugly." It's a feeling almost everyone can relate to; a desire to be worthy of being loved by the one you’re falling so hard for.
For those of you who just can’t get enough of Japanese Breakfast, catch them on their current tour with (Sandy) Alex G & Cende, and preorder Soft Sounds From Another Planet before it’s 7/14 release on Dead Oceans.
