The music of Emily Haines has always remained a constant in my life and for good reason. It's been far too long (nearly a decade according to NPR) since she released anything with her solo project - Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton and the return is marked with utter brilliance. "Fatal Gift" starts out like much of her SS material; soft, languid and emotional. There's a heartbreaking earnest, her dusty soprano billowing above it all. As the track continues "Fatal Gift" transforms, picking up speed, adding an element of quick-paced pop that's so unlike anything from what we've previously heard of the project. It invites you into a dark, entrancing dream world where all the lights are neon and a mysterious journey awaits you.
The track comes from LP Choir Of The Mind out Sept. 15 via Last Gang/eOne.
