Describing a song with the word magic has never fit quite in the way that it does on the single "Sick" from Den-Mate. The track and its accompanying visuals were released ahead of the band's new September 28th album, and it's a glorious, airy four minute that grants you the permission to be yourself, and shine with an unrestrained, powerful energy.
There's just so much happening here to grab onto, from the gorgeous confidence of vocalist Jules Hale to the continual evolution of instrumentals that compose themselves with as much beauty as the stars above, "Sick" is an indescribable experience. It's one of those musical moments that tears your heart apart in all the best ways, and it's deserving of repeated listens, as new elements are discovered each time.
According to Den-Mate's Jules Hale, this particular video is a celebration of self. "The video is about finding a community through the internet and being able to express yourself on a different medium," she said. "When I first started Den-Mate, I only had an online community. It was a place I could express my true self to a lot of people in the comfort of my own space. ‘Sick' was written around that time. I composed it on my own an held onto that guitar line for a while, changing the bass line from a meloncholic story to an empowering one. I feel very close to the story of the video because it’s hitting that same subject of finding community and expressing yourself and the empowerment within yourself.”
