song: "25, Alive" - Oh, Rose
It’s been nearly three years since Oh, Rose released the immensely beautiful Seven, and in that time, band member Olivia Rose experienced the passing of her mother, which served as inspiration for their new record, While My Father Sleeps out in August. Following the passing of her mother, Rose wrote “25, Alive,” and as explained in an essay for The Talkhouse, this track was once particularly difficult for Rose to revisit. The single is a celebration of growth and an examination of the complicated emotions that compromise our everyday. Rose’s vocals, which start out softly and at times etched in a warbly nature, gain a palpable strength, and tear through to a completion that features decision: “I don’t wanna feel anger anymore.” That desire to feel nothing and to shut yourself off is hinted at in the single’s instrumentals, with drums and guitar gathering force, allowing you just a moment to breath and steady yourself before propelling you forward into chaos. It’s emotional, raw, and a tender expression of someone’s most intimate feelings in the wake of loss.
