song: "Blue Again" - Weakened Friends
words: Kayla Carmicheal
What really makez someone happy? That seems to be the million dollar question in the heads of all of us, and with Weakened Friends's new single comes a confession: sometimes people put the happiness of others ahead of their own.
Their latest single “Blue Again” takes a paintbrush to this realization. In the midst of wavy choruses, the roll of guitars and base, Sonia Sturino’s vocals assure the unsure, tackling that feeling in our gut that can believe: “This isn’t right for me.” The subject matter of the single highlights the action of doing things for others and leaving personal satisfaction in the dust. There’s a hint of lo-fi dancing about the track, but there’s no mistaking the clarity of musicianship in the way the drums build intensity as the chorus hits.
Tucked between the catchy beats are lyrics that feel especially relatable for the day-to-day drag in life. “I wish I wasn’t so insecure,” Sturino sings above the riffs and thrashes. Grit and intensity roars throughout, enlivening Sturino's realizations.
This heavy-hitting single can easily become an anthem among those lost in their twenties, and with a name like Common Blah for their upcoming LP, it looks like there are certainly more relatable hits ahead. The only bad part? You'll have to wait until October 19 for the album to drop.
