Nearly one year after we first learned of Rosie Tucker and the artist has returned, releasing a stirring single titled “Gay Bar.” The track — which appears on the upcoming Never Not Never Not Never Not out 3/8 on New Professor — is thick and fuzzy, with Tucker’s husky soprano again taking off in the most unexpected and intricate ways. True to the song’s celebratory subject matter — Tucker explained it as celebrating “the incredible spectrum of characters dressed to impress at your average regional queer watering hole. I'm aiming for innocence & bliss here-- the joy of looking really good & dancing with people who already like you a lot — “Gay Bar” feels limitless and daring. Beginning with soft strings and Tucker’s recount of cowboys covered in sparkle, the song picks up midway through; vocals twirl in amidst the strings for the briefest moment, contorting into a falsetto that rings of freedom. And for its final trick, “Gay Bar” strips it all away, pulling back the instruments and leading us to a conclusion of distortion, leaving us with one final look at the party.
