When ice begins to form on the surface of a lake, all that stands between you and the freezing water underneath is a thin layer of glass, and it doesn’t take much for that ice to crack. Babehoven’s new single “Icelake” finds the young band at their most impassioned and poignant yet, a look at the fragile nature of relationships and the lengths at which people will go to feel loved, and how those things relate to the cold of winter. Songwriter Maya Bon assembles the tale of a relationship in bits and pieces—her lyrics passing by like fading memories, occasionally focusing in on little things like broken Tupperware. By the time the track reaches its finale, it’s firing on all cylinders, and Bon’s vocals are delivered with the intensity of someone who’s finally reached their breaking point.
