songs: "Mother/Father" + "Small Town Kid" - Cuffed Up
It’s apparent on their newest singles that Cuffed Up is trying, grappling for something more, and on “Mother/Father” and “Small Town Kid,” the Los Angeles-based act comes out swinging, seemingly hellbent on spreading their message. “Mother/Father” is a crisp post-punk stomp, with the band exploring fear and the finality of life, while “Small Town Kid” is unruly and swirling, delivering on a snarled manifesto of escaping a small town without the aid of anyone you intend to leave behind. There’s a palpable, but welcome darkness here; an unhinged energy present in the single’s dynamic instrumental presentation. So often we attempt to turn from those emotions that make us feel uncomfortable, but “Mother/Father” and “Small Town Kid” dive headfirst, inviting you to swim alongside their rapidly paced currents.
