The Groans continue to create some of the year’s most empowering and important music. After the previous release of “Skin,” the band returns with “Colors,” a guttural anthem of thankfulness and self-realization. “Colors” begins with breezy strings and light vocals, a far departure from their usual furious punk, but as the track continues, we experience a shift. A shouted melody and chaotic instrumentals provide support for a most impactful, shouted line: “Now I can see there’s so many colors/and I will be grateful to see the sunrise/When I thought it was over Oh its just begun!/But now I can see that I’m all the strength that I need.” In a time when it all feels so impossible, The Groans are here to remind us that maybe we’ll all turn out OK.
