Nashville’s Sophie Allison, also known as Soccer Mommy, has just released her first single from upcoming album Clean. The song, titled “Your Dog” comes complete with new video, featuring Allison desecrating a corpse and dancing near a body she appears to have just killed. Her outfit, OshKosh overalls, a brand commonly associated with children, innocence, and bright colors, is a stark contrast to her actions, which include dragging the body down the stairs and coloring on his face. It’s the end of a relationship, which while freeing, is often devastating and we see her go through the whole range of emotions: rage, regret, elation. She’s dragging him down the stairs, softly stroking his arm, and dancing near his body. It’s a mess and that’s often how our feelings are, even if the relationship needed to end. Her understatedly-sung lyrics should urge people to get out of damaging pairs: “I don’t to be your fucking dog/that you drag around.” This is the year of dumping the chump and Soccer Mommy’s “Your Dog” should be the jangly-guitared rallying cry.
