America’s favorite rock band has returned. Ratboys, the band that’s also most deserving of a national monument, is preparing to release their new album, Printer’s Devil, on Topshelf Records in February 2020. Ahead of that, we’re treated to “Alien With a Sleep Mask On,” one of their most dynamic songs to date. The track, which is equally as captivating in video form, is Ratboys at the height of their power. The guitars are roaring, but folksy — a true achievement, and once again, there’s an instant catchiness here, due in large part to the band’s continued willingness to share every part of their heart with the listener. While much of the track keeps you on your toes, it’s an unexpected breakdown that truly enlivens the single. In the briefest moment, vocals are stripped away, and instrumentals are given time to explore, mapping out their own constellations in an expansive room of space. Just as quickly as the band lands on this unexplored terrain, we’re swept back into the fold and tumble gracefully into a fantastic finish.
