There’s something unmistakably special about Hit Like a Girl. The band’s power is evident in their every release, and it’s especially present on “It’s Not Me,” a single that takes a heartbreaking look back at the one that ended up leaving.

Falling in love is absolutely terrifying, and it feels especially crushing when you realize the one you envisioned a future with is no longer part of those carefully laid plans. Sometimes relationships don’t work out, and “It’s Not Me” explores that finality and the feelings that continue to accompany a love you thought was it, even when that love has faded. The track’s power is due in large part to the vocals of Nicolle Maroulis. Throughout the single, Maroulis presents these confessionals, but there’s a palpable sadness, a feeling of “what if” that’s obvious in every note.

Their vocals intermingle with waves of heavy guitar and drums, creating a musical haze that’s an accurate representation of unresolved questions left to haunt you, hang above you with every passing second. Here it’s all unhurried, as Hit Like a Girl allows you to dwell in the aftermath, to explore the pieces left behind and find your own meaning in them. There’s something especially striking about the vulnerability present here, and it’s admirable that Hit Like a Girl allows one to have such an intimate part of their past.

the track premiered today via flood magazine.
