loner spring’s newest EP is a collection of tunes made for contemplative winter listening. The entire release is worthy of your ears, but its opener “On Mute” that gives the best precursor of the band’s message, as vocalist Aimee Neufeld looks back fondly on fading memories. There’s a lush moodiness to the instrumentals, as a ticking string pattern and beautiful keys back an surprisingly angry presence of guitar. It’s a frank and honest depiction of curiosity as Neufeld admits to wondering about someone who has since moved on. The track sticks with you, swirling about your head, creating a similar feeling to those weighted feelings of departed love that you’re so eager to be free of, but just can’t seem to escape.
