album of the week: I'm Not What You Expect - Shay Park

Shay Park’s newest EP is a total celebration from beginning to end. Opening with the quirky and completely fuzzy fun of “Birthday Song” — which celebrates one’s right to cry on their birthday — and closing with “Elastic Baby” — a slowed down ballad that features a touch of twang, I’m Not What You Expect is the sweetest little peek into Park’s colorful and endearing world.

Recorded in Park’s bedroom with the help of GarageBand, the release takes some of life’s most terrible moments and turns them into relatable pop that inspires you to just wanna dance. On “Supermarket Sushi,” Park uses starry keys and looped vocals to issue a bubbly and adorable dare, singing, “Just take a chance on me/I'm like supermarket sushi/I'm not what you expect.” While follow-up track “If I Were Beautiful” turns difficulties associated with depression into an unexpectedly sunny atmosphere that features guitar swathed in hazy fuzz, the addition of ukulele, and an unexpected rush of speed.

Whether you awaiting the end of winter or you’re just in need of a musical pick-me-up, I’m Not What You Expect is here to save the day. Fill your ears — and your heart — with five-tracks that will leave you feeling a little more prepared to face whatever life throws your way, even if that includes doing a pile of dirty dishes.
