EP: Remnant - Calicoco

EP: Remnant - Calicoco

It’s been a little more than a year since Calicoco released Float, a wondrous album that will sweep you away into daydreams, wishes, and hidden emotions. The performer has now followed that up with Remnants, a collection of demos that came before they started work on Float.

Demos can be a truly magical thing, giving you a glimpse at something in its rawest form, and taking you inside a creative process that’s yet unfinished. Such is certainly the case with Remnant. The 4-track release features just the smallest inkling of much larger ideas, with opening single “Shoelace” coming years before Giana Caliolo aka Calicoco would release their future material. There’s a tenderness and softness here, a quiet backing of strings punctuated only by Caliolo’s soft soprano. When listened to the tracks all together, it’s as if you’ve stumbled onto some yet unexplored fantasy world, a place where you’re free to explore someone’s still unformed ideas and identity. Roam through what Calicoco dreamed of for the future via the stream below, and catch them on tour with Hit Like a Girl.

As Giana Caliolo explained to TGE of the release, “Remnant is a small collection of demos that I've recorded over the last ten years while living in Rochester, NY. The first demo was recorded back in 2011 when I was in my first band, Buckets. For some reason, this particular tune continues to resonate with me as I grow. The two middle songs exist on my LP, “Float”, but I’ve always loved them in their original raw form. "I was the devil" is the last and newest tune; it’s a simple one, but it closes a complex chapter of my life. On the day I recorded it, I felt a new sense of clarity and now I’m ready for it to be out of my possession. Maybe someone else can feel a little bit of that catharsis too."
