With the passage of time comes the conclusion of relationships you once thought could last forever. “Berlin,” the newest single from Adult Mom, is a contemplation of that loss, with vocalist Stevie Knipe seated “in the car parked in the dark hearing rain drop on the roof” looking back on the six-year anniversary of a first meeting.

Like so many of our most formative friendships, this one started in a dorm room, and despite the years that have passed, Knipe recalls every part of that initial greeting on the sweet indie pop song that is “Berlin.” With the inclusion of keys, soft acoustic work, and Knipe’s tender vocals, one can practically feel the emotional height of their heart grappling with this loss. The confusion of wanting to fully understand why someone would leave is reflected in the track’s final moments, as vocals are laid atop one another, looping and gently cascading into silence.

As Stevie told TGE of the song: “‘Berlin’ is a song that took over a year to write. It’s about processing the loss of an important friendship without knowing the exact cause of the loss. Through loss, there are moments recalled, like meeting for the first time, the moment you got close with that person, singing “hole” in dorm rooms, drinking beer in a bathroom, and of course, the complete paralyzation that comes with loss. It’s about being in between healed and not, and trying my best to calculate the reasons why she left.”
