the beat: Nectar

Welcome to The Beat, a new TGE feature where our fave artists/bands/people give us tips on makeup! The most feature to ever me! Today we welcome the members of Nectar. Their album Knocking the Door is being rereleased on April 12, 2019.

KAMILA:

My makeup routine is very minimal in everyday life and on tour. My top priorities are correcting my skin and filling in my brows to frame my face. I also like to use blush and mascara to make myself look more awake and put together. In addition to makeup, I am obsessed with skincare! I love the routine and act of cleansing myself of the day. I find it very comforting to follow a skincare routine on tour – it makes me feel connected to myself and to a little piece of home. Tour can be hard! Makeup and skincare offer an opportunity to take time to care for yourself when you’re on the road.

Tour/Travel Tips:

  • Dry shampoo – I really like the Not Your Mother’s brand. Super helpful for keeping my bangs fresh even if I’m not able to shower as often on tour.

  • Micellar water – I prefer micellar water to makeup wipes because I find it less irritating; I’ve been using the one by Garnier. It’s so important to make sure you take off all your makeup before going to sleep! You can wash your face with this stuff and some cotton rounds as you wait to share a bathroom with your bandmates or right before you pass out in your sleeping bag!

  • Toner & Cotton Rounds – sometimes I use Thayer’s Witch Hazel as a toner after washing my face. Rather than bringing the whole bottle, I’ll soak several cotton rounds in the toner, put them in a Ziploc bag, and pack that since it is more compact than a bulky bottle.

  • Sunscreen – I wear sunscreen every day, but it is especially important on tour since we’re out and about all day. Car windows filter out UVB light, which cause sunburn, but not UVA rays, which penetrate the skin more deeply and can harm your skin over time. My favorite sunscreen right now is Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46 because it’s super lightweight.

  • Compact mirror – I highly recommend bringing a small handheld mirror on tour so that you can do your makeup literally anywhere!

  • Listen to Natch Beaut – my favorite beauty podcast!

ISABEL:

As a Leo, I love to express myself through how I look, and makeup can be a really fun part of that! Playing shows and touring can make getting up the energy and motivation to put on makeup feel really overwhelming, so I generally just try to keep it simple and use a few staple products that are quick to put on and make me feel cute with minimal effort.

  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Gel in Clear or Glossier boy brow in Clear

    • I tend to like a more natural look on my brows, but I want them to look deliberate, so I use a clear brow gel just to keep them in place. The Anastasia one is more of a gel and dries hard, but holds strong. The Glossier one is a little softer and dries more like a paste.

  • Sephora cream blush in Golden Spice No4

    • This is so old, I think they stopped making it. It’s just a nice shimmery rose gold cream blush.

  • Milk Mini Highlighter in “Turnt” (rose gold)

    • Easy to use, just swipe it on and blend out. I usually use my fingers. Highlighter is a small touch that goes a long way, which makes it perfect for quickly putting on in the 5 minutes you’ve left yourself to get ready before your set.

  • Maybelline Great Lash mascara in Blackest Black or Very Black

    • A drugstore gem, truly. I like my lashes big and cartoonish, so this thick sludge does the absolute trick.

  • Too Faced Chocolate Bar eyeshadow palette (Semi-Sweet)

    • I have the semi-sweet version of this! I usually go for a soft brown smoky eye with a bit of shimmer in the inner corner or on the middle of my eyelids—all I need is 2 or 3 of these colors and a heavy hand with a blending brush. It’s a very versatile palette with a bunch of really wearable colors. These also smell like chocolate so you can feel luxurious while you’re putting it on, which is a HUGE sell for me (as a Leo).

  • Glossier lidstar in Slip

    • As you might be able to tell, I’m a sucker for rose gold. I either use this by itself on my whole lid with a quick swipe of mascara (maximum shimmer-to-effort ratio) or as an extra kick in my smoky eye.

  • Glossier Generation G sheer matte lip in Cake

    • If you’re looking for something really subtle, this is it. I have it in Cake and just realized they also make a color called Leo (!).

  • Sailor Moon Black Liquid Eyeliner Pen

    • I don’t know where to get this because my girlfriend bought it for me in Japan! Any black liquid eyeliner will do the job, the cuter the packaging the better.
