song: "Wonder" — Lomelda

Lomelda, the nom de plume of singer-songwriter Hannah Read, are at their best when most experimental, finding the hidden corners of guitar-based indie-rock with a fluttering adventurousness. That’s why their new single, “Wonder” works so damn well. It’s a song that immediately cuts through the noise of a million singer-songwriters strumming on a million guitars or banging out a million piano melodies. Read hits us with what feels like a thought already in progress, her controlled vocals hypnotize with their wistful, jagged directness. “When you get it, give it all, you said,” she repeats like a mantra over seesaw piano and a sputtering drumbeat. But soon “Wonder” starts to swirl toward a breaking point, with Read’s piercing vocals taking over the mix. It’s a fever pitch that hits like the last thirty seconds of a dream that’s neither nightmare nor fantasy.
“Wonder” marks the first single from Hannah, Lomelda’s upcoming third LP to be released on 9/4 via Double Double Whammy. Make sure to check out the single goofy, endearing video below.
