video: "Darkest Light" - Shana Falana

In the video for “Darkest Light,” the title track from Shana Falana’s recently released album, we’re immediately submerged into a world of moodiness and darkness. The backdrop — which features a dimly lit stage, shadows of a performance, and just flashes of faces — is a more than suitable accompaniment to a track built entirely on subtle rage and powerful force. There’s an obvious anguish here, with Falana crying out over the slowly moving, but still vengeful, sounds of guitar and drums. “Darkest Light” is slow to fully reveal itself, and instead, much like the video, flashes of its identity are gradually unveiled. Husky vocals later turn to passionate shouts, strings switch to spacey effects, and the only constant is pounding percussion that builds out a steady beat. It’s one of those moments in which you feel yourself slowly losing control, and instead, you allow this brief musical journey to guide you.

As Falana explained of the clip, "We shot this video with our main audio and visual collaborators for this album, D. James Goodwin (who shot and directed it, he also recorded and produced the LP) and Monik Geisel (who assisted and photographed, she also took the photo on the album cover) ... this record has been all about working with close friends and putting personal relationships over bigger ‘industry’ ones, and I think that has helped make this our strongest album yet, in every way.

The video is basically what our live show looks like right now, which feels like a fun way to engage people online, and then if they come to a show be like ‘look! In real life!’ ... We’ve been using trippy projections for years, but now it’s like a full on 80s rock-goth fantasy coming to life on stage for me with lights, fog etc!”

Darkest Light appears on Darkest Light, which is out now on Arrowhawk Records.
