Hello, today I come with good news. THICK had a sleepover and we’re all invited. On March 6, the band will release 5 Years Behind, their long-awaited debut full length, and after sharing the title track, the band has returned with “Bumming Me Out,” which is the song equivalent of my daily thought patterns. Sure, the visuals contain the band partaking in the slumber party of my dreams — Lisa Prank bedsheets, a round of Pretty, Pretty Princess, and Parent Trap-inspired pranks included — but it’s the track’s lyrical content that truly resonates.
Beginning with grungy, thick guitars, and purposeful punches of percussion, the band confesses, “Never knew I’d be so tired/Fighting for what I believe.” And in a world where bad news appears on every social media feed, and the news can feel so tiring (especially with an upcoming election), “Bumming Me Out” puts to word all of those aggressively bad feelings that seem to linger overhead. Reaching its chorus, the band proclaims, “Everything that I see, bumming me out/Everything that I read, wearing me down/Everyone that I see is freaking me out.” And yet despite the grueling task of just getting through each day, THICK makes things a little lighthearted, escaping to a time of childhood with their visuals, which include a guest appearance from a skeleton. Although this track feels lighter and less vengeful than their previous material, it still contains the band’s trademark spunk, and for one brief moment, it’s encouraging to know that everyone, even our favorite band, can get a little bogged down by the bad.
